Understand your target

Duolingo English Test scores explained:
what you need and how to reach it

Your target is the score your institution and programme require. Here is how the DET score works and how to plan for it.

How the DET score works

The overall score is reported on a scale from 10 to 160, in steps of 5. You also receive four subscores: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production.

Duolingo publishes official tables that compare DET scores with the CEFR and with other English tests. Use the official tables, not unofficial charts.

Choose the right target score

Don’t assume one score works everywhere. For each programme:

  • Check the official admissions page
  • Note the minimum overall score and any minimum subscores
  • Check deadlines and how long scores stay valid
  • Ask the admissions office when something is unclear

Use estimates carefully

A diagnostic or mock-test estimate helps you plan your study. It is not an official result and cannot predict your exact score.

Prepare by skill, not only by total

Train each subscore separately: often it's one weak subscore, not your total, that blocks an application.
